Speech and Language Link

Speech and Language Link

Communication and interaction is at the heart of accessing the curriculum and being prepared for adulthood.

We recognise the impact that speech and language has at all ages.  Some of pour primary settings are part of a Cambridge University initiative to evaluate the impact of early years speech and language intervention.

We fund all settings to have access to Speech and Language Link’s online assessment and intervention programme ensuring that targeted speech and language support above and beyond Time to Talk and other school-held interventions is available to all of our children and young people.

We understand that unmet communication and interaction needs can lead to significant levels of dysregulation which can then contribute to more complex behaviours being displayed.  This is, therefore, a significant intervention from the trust.

Screening

Assessment for all Year 3 and Year 7 children de facto!

Every school can assess every child’s speech and language skills at the start of key stages2 and 3.  Further, where there is an identified reason to do so, any other children can also be screened with a quality report produced identifying areas of strength and areas for development or focus.

Targeted intervention

The intervention packages are included as part of the programme.  Children and young people access some of this through the programme and some of it is designed for delivery by adults – all is available and provided through the system.

Training for staff

Communication friendly schools are safer schools where children and adults can flourish

With training about how to use the package available, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the training that all staff can access.

There are webinars and training modules available to help improve the understanding of staff about how to develop more communication friendly learning spaces.

The training is all delivered by therapists.
